Second attempt: Helping Hand resurrect redevelopment of retirement village five years after rejection

1 min read

The Not For Profit provider had a $4 million plan to redevelop its retirement village in North Adelaide rejected by Adelaide City Council’s planning panel in February 2020.

It had sought to demolish two buildings and build nine, two-storey apartments.

Now it has submitted new plans to South Australia’s planning commission to demolish the village and replace it with a 2270sqm retirement facility with two, three-storey residential blocks, each with 12 independent living units. Woods Bagot is the architect.

This would be Stage 1 of Helping Hand’s vision of a continuum of care provision with aged care, retirement and wellness services within one inner-city location. It aims to operate three continuum of care precincts in North Adelaide, Whyalla and Clare.

CEO Chris Stewart said the North Adelaide precinct will be named Westering in honour of Reverend Arthur Strange, founder of Helping Hand, who purchased the original property in North Adelaide in 1953 to provide care for 18 older women.
