The Yutjuwala Djiwarr aged care centre in Nhulunbuy, in the East Arnhem region, 1,000km east of Darwin, has opened its doors after 20 years in the planning.
The 33-bed home has been developed in consultation with the local Yolŋu community and features double rooms with ensuites, dementia care and palliative care, and was expected to cost around $30 million to build – nearly $1 million per bed.
The home is operated by Australian Regional and Remote Community Services (ARRCS), which is part of UnitingCare and provides care services for people in regional and urban Northern Territory communities.
