Renowned epidemiologist Mary-Louise McLaws AO, whose calm advice was a reassuring constant during the COVID-19 pandemic, has died after an 18-month battle with brain cancer.
Despite her high profile and international reputation, Mary-Louise always made herself available, even at the height of the pandemic, sharing her world-class knowledge of infection control, particularly in relation to residential aged care.
Not only a qualified source of information, Mary-Louise’s competent demeanor provided reassurance to thousands during the pandemic, through her media commentary.
Mary-Louise was not afraid to speak out when she believed it was necessary. When aged care residents with COVID were being treated in facilities, she insisted they go to hospital. When staff refused to be vaccinated, she said they had a moral obligation to get the jab.
Mary-Louise was diagnosed with brain cancer 18 months ago. It came as devastating news to all those who had come to rely on her generosity and expertise.
