Capecare had to keep 41 brand new aged care beds closed for 2.5 years due to staff shortages

Capecare Dunsborough, located on the coast 250km south of Perth, was the first, and remains the only, aged care home in the town.

When the 82-bed home opened in July 2021, the Not For Profit provider Capecare only opened 41 of the rooms because staff shortages in the region meant they were not able to properly staff them. The remaining 41 rooms have remained closed for two-and-a-half years.

Now the operator is accepting expressions of interest for the previously closed rooms, which have remained unused, and expects to have them filled by February next year.

“Capecare delayed opening the whole facility until we were confident it could be consistently, fully staffed with an exceptional care team," said Capecare CEO Tim Nayton.

“A stabilisation of staffing across both our Dunsborough and Busselton facilities has allowed us to move forward to release the remaining 41 rooms."

The complex also includes 21 independent living apartments and has recently become the new headquarters for the Dunsborough Country Women’s Association.

Refundable Accommodation Deposits range from $400,000 for a single room with shared ensuite, up to $750,000 for a single room with ensuite and bay window.
