The NSW Council is looking to transition ownership of the 40-bed Yallambee Lodge in Cooma and the 14-bed Snowy River Hostel in Berriedale after announcing the services are running at a $2.1 million deficit.
The Council has blamed increasing regulation from the Aged Care Quality Standards implemented from July 2019 and the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety for the losses.
Expressions of interest from specialist aged care providers are now being sought, but until a buyer is found, the Council will continue to deliver the services and move ahead with a $4 million, 16-bed new build next to the Cooma facility.
The Council had received the funding from the Federal Government in 2018 and must go ahead with the development under the service agreement signed with the Department of Health.
However, Mayor Peter Beer said a significant financial investment would be required from a new provider to ensure the services can continue.
“A strong strategic plan for the region will ensure facilities can service those most in need, including high care which is currently limited,” Mayor Beer said.
