Dr Shane Moran sells Darling House for $23.1 million

The luxury Dawes Point historic home, Darling House, which was refurbished to become a luxury private aged care residence, has been sold vacant, after sales of the seven luxury suites, completed in 2021, did not proceed.

In June 2016, Dr Shane Moran, member of the Moran care dynasty, was revealed as the mystery buyer of heritage listed Darling House in Sydney’s Dawes Point. The historic home was at the time the most expensive of the properties sold in the NSW Government’s sell off of historic harbourside public housing.


Georgian Darling House was run as a low-cost aged care facility until 2015, when, controversially, the Government ended its $5-a-week rent agreement.

Shane acquired the 759sqm property, which was built in the 1840s, for $7.7 million and oversaw a luxury $10 million refurbishment, which was completed in 2021.

The refurbishment was intended to recreate the property as a small-home, hotel-like private aged care home.


The seven luxury suites were initially priced from between $2 million and $4 million for a 99-year lease, plus a $2,000 a month service fee, which was to include meals, 24/7 staff, laundry and a car to take residents on outings.

However, the sales did not proceed, and the property was sold vacant, achieving a price of $23.1 million.

The purchaser is the family of Filipino businessman and Western Sydney Wanderers football club co-owner, Jefferson Cheng, The Sydney Morning Herald has reported.
