Mable Care Factor report: 8% of Australians engaged in care work

1 min read

Australians exhibit a high ‘care factor’, making them ideal candidates for working in the ‘care economy’, according to Mable’s 2023 Care Factor Report.

Which is good news, as Australia will need huge numbers of care workers as the population ages.

In 2021, there were 460,000 care and support workers in Australia. It’s expected that number will rise to 720,000 by 2049-50.

The survey of more than 1,000 Australians aged over 18 years, found 52% would consider becoming care workers in the future and 8% are already engaged in care work.

Care work is most appealing among young Australians – 65% of 18-25 year olds and 69% of 26-35 year olds would consider full or part-time independent support work.

Two in five said they’d place higher value on a career helping people than higher pay or work-life balance.
