October 1 marks United Nation’s International Day of Older Persons – number of people aged over 60 to outnumber those under five

The theme for this year’s 30th anniversary event is (perhaps unsurprisingly) COVID-related: ‘Pandemics – Do They Change How We Address Age and Ageing?’.

The day also marks the start of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Decade of Healthy Ageing (2020 – 2030), which aims to bring together public and private organisations to collaborate on actions to improve the lives of older people around the world.

It’s a relevant time for action – this year for the first time, the number of people aged 60 years and old worldwide will outnumber children younger than five years.

In Australia alone, almost 4 million people (or 15% of the population) are now aged 65 and over, and this is projected to climb to 8.8 million (22%) in the 2050s.

The global total will be 1.5 billion.

All of these people will need places to live, that cater to their health needs.

As we’ve mentioned before, herein lies an opportunity for retirement village operators.
