The New Zealand operator, which first purchased land in Australia in 2019, this week lodged a planning permit with Surf Coast Council for a new village in the coastal town of Torquay, 97km southwest of Melbourne's CBD.

This follows the council’s approval of Summerset’s Briody Drive West development plan in April this year which allows up to 290 independent and assisted retirement units and 80 residential aged care beds.

“Our growth strategy in Australia is supported by bringing our successful integrated village model to retiring Australians, with our key point of difference being our continuum of care offering,” Summerset CEO Scott Scoullar said.

Summerset also said Monash Council had unanimously approved Summerset’s plans for a new village at Oakleigh South in Melbourne’s inner east. Located next door to the Metropolitan Golf Club, the village is a boutique offering, providing 95 independent living units and a 66-bed aged care home.

Summerset has also broken ground at its second village site of Chirnside Park in Melbourne’s northeast. Located within the Chirnside Park town centre precinct and with views to the Yarra Valley, the new village will support 185 independent living unts, 72 aged care beds and 24 serviced apartments.

Summerset’s first village at Cranbourne North, 39km southeast of Melbourne's CBD, welcomed its first residents in March this year. The village provides independent living homes in a mix of villas and cottages. With the first stage of independent living with a range of serviced apartments and a 72 bed residential aged care home in progress.

“The first half of 2024 has seen us reach a number of really important milestones in Australia which is credit to our local team” Scott said.
