Anglicare Sydney turning old pub into social housing for over-55s

A shuttered pub in Port Kembla, NSW, is set to become units for seniors in need of social housing.

The $10 million project will see the Steelworks Hotel turned into 30 units for over-55s in the Illawarra, run by Anglicare Sydney, plus community and social spaces; its exterior will remain intact.

“We’re committed to providing social and affordable housing across NSW and this project is one of several we have in the pipeline with this government,”
said Simon Miller (pictured), CEO of Anglicare Sydney.

The NSW Department of Communities and Justice’s Community Housing Innovation Fund (CHIF) will kick in $5 million towards the project, according to Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Services Natasha Maclaren-Jones.

“Older Australians are at higher risk of homelessness and this project will help provide local seniors with a roof over their head in safe, secure and accessible housing.

“This is just one of the many projects under the Community Housing Assistance Agreement for the Illawarra, valued at approximately $55.3 million, which will create 135 new dwellings, including more than 102 new social and 33 affordable homes,” she said.

Construction is expected to complete by next September.
