Federal Government told fastest way to build houses is retirement living

1 min read

Mike Zorbas, Property Council Chief Executive, issued a statement on 8 May after the  National Housing Supply and Affordability Council said there will only be 943,000 of the 1,200,000 new homes needed by 2029 actually built.

“In the report’s own words, we need more housing of all types – social housing through to market home ownership,” he said.

“The golden levers here are planning efficiency, land release and last mile infrastructure and governments are finally starting to understand this.

“Then there is the fastest way for the government to introduce high-quality new homes to take pressure off the broader market – retirement living communities, purpose-built student accommodation, and build-to-rent (BTR) housing.”

Daniel Gannon, Executive Director, of the Property Council’s off-shoot, the Retirement Living Council, has been lobbying the government to get retirement living involved in the National Housing Accord

On 16 August 2023, National Cabinet agreed to a target of 1.2 million new homes over five years, from 1 July 2024. This is an additional 200,000 new homes above the original National Housing Accord one million homes target agreed by states and territories in 2022.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Sunday announced an $11.3 billion package to be unveiled in the federal budget on Tuesday to fast-track new supply, reduce homelessness and assist people fleeing domestic violence.
