Queensland's biggest social housing project includes two-bedroom homes for people over 55

FCC Construction Australia and Modscape have begun the building of 490 purpose-built one- and two-bedroom homes including 245 social housing apartments, 223 affordable homes, and 22 specialist disability accommodation apartments, in Woree, a suburb of Cairns, Far North Queensland.

The project is aimed at older Queenslanders who are looking to downsize from their current home, and in turn, free up larger homes for families, said the Queensland Government. It is being financially supported by ANZ and forms part of the State’s Homes for Queenslanders plan and contributes to the target of delivering one million new homes, including 53,500 social homes, by 2046.

ANZ will provide funding for the project alongside Housing Australia and the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF). Housing Australia will offer a grant through the National Housing Infrastructure Facility.

Queensland Council of Social Services and The Town of Nowhere campaign, which was started in March 2023, said Queensland's homelessness rate was three times that of the entire nation.
