Cairns land rezoned for development, including retirement village

A block of land in Gordonvale, Queensland, has been rezoned for a new community and industrial subdivision – including a retirement village.

The 13.9-hectare site on the corner of the Bruce Highway and Riverstone Rd will host a three-stage development, with the third precinct to potentially contain a retirement village as well as a childcare centre, a tourist park, a place of worship, and a relocatable home park.

Three councillors voiced their opposition to the rezoning for several reasons, including limitations on public input; however, the trio did not have enough support to block the rezoning request.

“I can’t support it in its current form. Impact assessment has a higher level of scrutiny than code assessment, and I just feel we are taking something away from the community,” said councillor Brett Olds.

The two precincts fronting the highway – including the precinct with the retirement village – will be limited to building heights of 8.5 metres or less.

Cairns Regional Council last year approved a 162-unit retirement village for a sugar cane farm on nearby Draper Rd in Gordonvale.
