The provider – which aims to ‘Do Dementia Differently’ – has recently opened its newest home in the leafy suburb of Thornleigh, 22km northwest of the Sydney CBD.
The 10-bedroom, two-storey home is the newest of Group Homes Australia’s (GHA)’s 22 homes, and follows its real home model of living which sees residents share a family home in a typical residential community.
Founded in 2012 by Executive Director Tamar Krebs, every GHA home has 6-10 bedrooms and offers 24/7 dementia care, including Flexible Respite, long-term, end-of-life and palliative care.
Care staff – called ‘Homemakers’ – oversee the daily operations of GHA’s homes. Personal care, domestic care, and clinical care are all provided by GHA’s team of Homemakers and Registered Nurses, and supported by regular visits from local GPs and Allied Health services. Emotional support for residents and their families is provided by their own team of Social Workers.
Residents living with late and younger onset dementia, as well as neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s, MND, ALS, TBI and stroke, are supported to live with a sense of purpose and meaning, engaging in their local community daily through walks and outings to local coffee shops, parks, and other meaningful settings.
Along with permanent care and Flexible Respite, which offers a choice of short stay options that are adapted to the family’s needs, GHA also provides support to people and families with a recent diagnosis who are seeking education and tools on how to live with dementia. This is through their regular Demystifying Dementia complimentary educational sessions to support people living with dementia and their families and friends.
In addition, the group delivers free Federal Government-funded five-day ‘Rementia Together’ retreats, designed for people with a recent dementia diagnosis and run in dedicated GHA homes or regional Airbnb homes.
